In and Out of Frame: A Pretoria City Walk

Alet Pretorius joined 012Central on one of their city walks. Walking through central Pretoria, you notice how quickly the rhythm shifts; people entering and exiting the landscape. From the elevated stillness of a roof near Church Square, the city unfolds from a new perspective. Up here, the daily hurry looks tranquil. When walking on street level, moments that usually pass unnoticed start to hold your attention. The quiet, historic threshold of the exit at the Queen Street Mosque; passengers glancing out from a passing bus window; a taxi cutting through golden morning light. Figures like Samuel "Sammy Davis," who has been selling books and magazines here since the nineties, remind us that the city retains elements as well as constantly transitions. Street photography is less about seeking new scenery and more about finding new ways of seeing. By shifting position, stepping up to a roof, pausing at an exit, or catching a fleeting reflection through a vehicle window. The ordinary routines of Pretoria transform into scenes with texture and narrative.
